The black lamb I slay, the black blood I spill,
a chant to the weak bones of the damned.

Gather thirsty souls of the dead,
maidens, child forgotten, wounded men.
But none shall drink, 'til the voice is heard.
Forever in this dry land of grey.

τὶ οἱ σάρκες καὶ τὰ κόκκαλα νευρόδετα δὲ μένουν,
μόν' τ' ἀφανίζει τῆς φωτιᾶς ἡ λυσσασμένη φλόγα,
ἅμα ἀπὸ τ' ἄσπρα κόκκαλα ἡ πνοή μας φύγη πρῶτα.

καὶ κράταε τὸ χρυσὸ ραβδί· μὲ γνώρισε, καὶ μοῦ 'πε·
Διογέννητε γιέ, πολύτεχνε Ὀδυσσέα,
τί ἀφῆκες, ὦ κακόμοιρε, τὸ φῶς τοῦ ἥλιου κι ἦρθες
νὰ δῆς νεκροὺς κι αὐτὸν ἐδῶ, τὸν ἄχαρο τὸν κόσμο ;

Εἶπε, κι ἐγὼ τραβήχτηκα, καὶ στὸ φηκάρι χώνω
τ' ἀργυροκάρφωτο σπαθί· κι αἷμα σὰν ἤπιε μαῦρο,
ὁ μέγας μάντης λάλησε κι αὐτὰ τὰ λόγια μοῦ 'πε·

“Γλυκειὰ πατρίδα μελετᾶς, θεόλαμπρε Ὀδυσσέα·
ὅμως σὲ μάχεται ὁ θεός· θαρρῶ πὼς δὲν ξεφεύγεις
τὸν Κοσμοσείστη, ποὺ θυμὸ γιὰ σένα μέσα του ἔχει,
καὶ βράζει ἀπὸ τὴ μάνητα, ποὺ τύφλωσες τὸ γιό του.
